BRALY, Harold Hyde (I5714)

225 Founder of Broadway Department Stores and Bullock's. He was responsible for developing a great deal of Hollywood. He also purchased and developed Westwood, Holmby Hills and the UCLA campus. This was done through the Janss Development Co. Harold Janss was Mr. Letts son in law. Harold and his brother Edwin developed quite a bit of Los Angeles from the turn of the century into the 1960's. Areas from Hancock Park to Thousand Oaks.
His son, Arthur Letts, Jr. built the Playboy Mansion.

226 Frederick was baptised like all his brothers and sisters at St. Killian's church, his Godmother was a Cath Dawes. Frederick and two brothers, Arthur and Thomas went to try there luck on the Kalgoolie gold fields Early 1900's. When he returned
he went back to work in the mines around Bendigo. Frederick had worked for 20 years in Lode mines when on 18 December 1914 he passed his exam for Second class Mining Manager with the Victorian Department of Mines. Frederick had intrended to
take the family to Tasmania after this and work in the mines in central Tasmania, some wives of miners who had already worked in Tasmania told Jessie that they could never get there washing dry because of the weather, this reason alone seems to
be the reason for them staying in Bendigo.
Frederick lived in Golden Gully when he married Jessie Munro from Mandurang, the witness's were Jessie's sister Emily Munro and Emily's boyfriend Thomas Truscott. Frederick died 7 Feb 1921 from bad lungs which he obviously received from many
years down in the mines, he was only 41 when he died and left 6 children the Youngest Eunice, only 18 months old.

It's hard to believe that a city with only 90,000 people has one of the largest cathedrals in the southern hemisphere. At 86m the central spire of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo is the third largest in Australia behind only Melbourne's St Patrick's Cathedral at 105m and St Paul's Cathedral at 96m.

Construction of the Gothic Revival cathedral commenced in 1896 but wasn't fully completed until 2003 when the bell was finally added. The building is made from locally sourced freestone and blackwood and imported Italian marble while the large 21m stained glass window came from Birmingham. Reputedly it is the last ever Gothic styled cathedral built in the world.
